Through our community relationships we aim to contribute to the community which we have practised in for the last 150 years. We aim to build long term partnerships both with our clients and within the community.
We have partnered with Heart Kids NZ (formerly Kids Heart Foundation NZ). Heart Kids is the only NZ charity that supports the children and families of children who suffer from congenital heart disease.

Champion Canterbury Awards: Champion Emerging Business Award
We are a partner of the Champion Canterbury Awards. These awards celebrate business excellence, passion and success recognising the contribution that small, medium and large enterprises make to the vitality of the the Canterbury Region.
The Champion Emerging Business Award recognises emerging businesses (operating for 3 years or less) that have achieved significant growth as a result of effective business practices and delivery. These businesses demonstrate strategic growth, with an astute insight of the market they operate in, exhibiting entrepreneurial spirit as well as the solid foundations for sustainable success.
The Champion Canterbury Business Awards are now widely recognised as the premier regional business awards in New Zealand and host the largest Awards Ceremony in the country. The Awards are an eagerly anticipated event on the Canterbury corporate and social calendar.

Wider Community Involvement
Both staff and partners are involved in governance on a voluntary basis for a diverse range of community organisations. The depth of our commitment can be seen in the range of organisations involved which include School Boards, Church, education, sport, farming, environmental and heritage organisations, charitable trusts and Community Centres.
Our staff organise annual charity fund-raising events for a range of charities. Most recently we have fundraised for the Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the St John Appeal.
Our lawyers are involved with the Christchurch Community Law Centre and NZ Citizens Advice Bureau. Community involvement is part of legal staff's Personal Development Plans. We have team members actively involved with the Graeme Dingle Foundation, YMCA Christchurch and a number of other organisations.
To further our commitment to academic excellence, we offer an annual Torts prize and an annual Resource Management and Environment Law prize at the University of Canterbury.
In the past we have supported the exporters in our community by having two of our partners act as judges for the annual Canterbury Export Awards.
We have a strong interest in good environmental practice and in minimising the environmental impact of our business. As a commercial office the single largest source of our carbon emissions is electricity consumption. We are endeavouring to implement electricity efficiencies throughout our office.
We are achieving efficiencies through:
Replacing single function devices with new multi function devices which combine copying, printing and scanning resulting in energy savings.
Introduction of flat LCD computer screens across the firm which use half as much energy as earlier models.
Lighting used on an "as-needed" basis.
Programming our after hours air conditioning to work for a maximum of 90 minutes when it is activated.
Have a recycling programme including paper, cardboard and other recyclable waste.
Ensure all corporate stationery is printed on FSC approved paperstock.
We have made presentations to our rural clients advising on the projected impact of climate change in the Canterbury District and we continue to seek new opportunities to improve our environmental performance.
